Current information suggests that 1.5 million people in this country are affected annually by roundworms of the Toxacara species (Dog and Cat Round worm).
The symptoms of infections vary from mild asthma to approximately 60 children each year needing an eye removed as a result of migrating toxacara larvae.
25% of dogs have toxacara eggs on their coat.
Guidelines from the British Small Animal Veterinary Association recommends up to monthly worming to prevent this. The practice suggests the regime appropriate fo most dogs and cats is quarterly worming with an approved wormer. Often wormers purchased from the practice are cheaper than many inferior over the counter preparations.
